Inflammation arises as arnprotective mechanism but persistent inflammation is irritating, harmful and canrnresult in chronic diseases. Zingiber zerumbet is a perennial herbrnbelonging to the family Zingiberaceae. Anti-inflammatory effect of thernmethanolic extract of the rhizome of Zingiber zerumbet collected from therndistrict of Kottayam, Kerala was studied using THP1 cell line. The cell linernwas induced with lipopolysaccharide and the inhibitory effect of the extract onrnthe activity of cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase, myeloperoxidase and nitric oxidernsynthase was tested. The extract possessed the ability to inhibitrncyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase, myeloperoxidase and nitric oxide synthase inducedrnby lipopolysaccharide. This showed multiple mode of action of the extract inrnexecuting anti-inflammatory effect. Hence the methanolic extract of the rhizomernof Zingiber zerumbet can be used to develop drugs for various allergicrnand inflammatory disorders in traditional as well as modern medicine.
