Phytochemical characterization and antimicrobial efficacy evaluation of bioactive compounds derived from leaf extract of cordia macleodii against Enterococcus faecalis

Minarbha Patel, Ankita Agrawal and Amiya Kumar Patel

Increased antimicrobial resistance is a global healthcare concern, which demands the exploration of alternative antimicrobials to combat microbial infections. Medicinal plants produce structurally diverse and functionally distinct bioactive compounds with higher therapeutic activities. Although therapeutic efficacy of phytochemicals from Cordia species was documented, the literature regarding their antimicrobial activities is scanty. The present study was designed to screen, characterize and identify potent phytochemicals in the methanolic leaf extract of C. macleodii and to evaluate their antimicrobial activities. Two potent bioactive compounds (Tiliroside and Ouabain) were identified and their antimicrobial activities against Enterococcus faecalis were determined. The leaf extract as well as bioactive compounds of Cordia macleodii showed significant degree of antibacterial potency against Enterococcus faecalis. The bioactive compounds might serve as potential candidate for antimicrobial agent and future investigation to determine the mode of action will be beneficial to fight against the infectious diseases.
