GUA Kumara, Sanjay Gupta, A Vijaya Lakshmi and V Narasimha

Introduction: Padmaka, scientifically known as Prunus cerasoides D. Don, is a member of the Rosaceae family. It is native to the Himalayan region and has been utilized in traditional medicine for centuries.
Objectives: This study aims to systematically compile classical references and modern research on Padmaka to evaluate its medicinal significance and emphasize the need for comprehensive pharmacological and clinical studies.
Methodology: A literary review was conducted using Ayurvedic classical texts, including Caraka Sa?hit?, Su?ruta Sa?hit?, and A????ga H?daya Sa?hit?, along with their translations and various Nigha??u. Additionally, modern botanical and pharmacological literature on Prunus cerasoides was analyzed to assess its therapeutic potential.
Results and Discussion: Padmaka is recognized in Ayurveda for its Pitta-Kapha-??maka and V?ta-Vardhaka properties. Classical references demonstrate its Pitta-??maka action, as most of its indications are linked to Pitta imbalances. Additionally, its V?ta-Vardhaka nature is valuable in treating V?ta-related disorders such as Pak??gh?ta (hemiplegia), Sarv??ga-gh?ta (full-body paralysis), and Ek??ga-gh?ta (localized paralysis) which are associated with Pitta and Kapha do?as. The inclusion of Padmaka in Da?em?ni (Caraka) and Dravya Gana (Su?ruta and V?gbha?a) further highlights its potency in addressing relevant health conditions. Though Ayurveda traditionally emphasizes the heartwood as the primary medicinal part, modern scientific studies have also explored the therapeutic potential of Padmaka’s leaves, stem bark, flowers, and fruits. However, the scientific validation of Padmaka remains limited, both in Ayurvedic and modern research. Ayurveda classifies Padmaka as an effective treatment for the A??am?h?roga group, which includes diseases that are difficult to cure, as well as for contemporary health issues such as male and female infertility, menstrual disorders, and Diabetes.
Conclusion: Padmaka is well-documented in Ayurvedic texts for its use in treating various conditions, including challenging diseases. However, scientific validation is limited, with significant research gaps. Additional studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and provide scientific evidence for its therapeutic applications.
