Development of edible gummies for enhancement of vision and nerves

Aditya Ghadge, Siddhant Gawande and Gautam Palshikar

The study explores the development of edible gummies enriched with lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids known for their protective effects on eye and brain health. These gummies aim to address health issues like digital eye strain, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and cognitive decline caused by increased use of digital devices. Designed as a convenient and enjoyable alternative to traditional supplements, they are particularly suitable for children, elderly individuals, and those with difficulty swallowing pills. The formulation includes lutein and zeaxanthin alongside complementary nutrients such as vitamins A, C, E, astaxanthin, bilberry extract, and omega-3 fatty acids to maximize synergistic benefits. These ingredients collectively improve visual acuity, alleviate digital eye strain symptoms, and support long-term ocular and cognitive health. The gummies are consumer-friendly, featuring natural fruit flavors, vegan options using pectin instead of gelatin, and gluten-free formulations. Quality evaluation confirmed desirable characteristics such as appealing physical appearance, consistent weight (6.08 g per gummy), optimal pH (3-5), pleasant taste (sweet with tanginess), soft texture, and uniform thickness (5-8 mm). This project demonstrates the potential of functional foods like lutein and zeaxanthin-fortified gummies in preventive healthcare by addressing modern lifestyle challenges while promoting overall well-being.
