Dalbergia sissoo is a tropically growing tree species belonging to genus Dalbergia and family Fabaceae. The plant has been known from ancient times to possess remarkable therapeutic potential and hence has been employed since ages as a cure to various disorders such as dysentery, diarrhoea, fever, diabetes, skin ailments, wounds, cough, blood disorders, eye conditions and so on. With advancement in time and technology, the plant has been the subject of substantial research to determine various phytochemicals and determine their role in therapeutic effect of D. sissoo. A number of pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-spermatogenic, antiulcer, anticancer, analgesic, antipyretic, antioxidant, anticonvulsant, osteogenic, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, anti-obesity and more have been confirmed in the plant species. The effects of plant have been found to be significant indicating it to be a potential agent for treatment of various pharmacological ailments. Continuous efforts are being made to use the therapeutic potential of D. sisoo to formulate a potential treatment option with fewer side effects and greater efficacy.
