Ethnomedicinal plants with promising antivenom potential for treating snake bites: A neglected tropical disease

Sujatha Govindaraj

Snake bites, one of the neglected public health problems could lead to acute medical complications such as paralysis, fatal hemorrhage, kidney failure, local tissue destruction and demise. Though efforts have been made to discover novel medications the cost of several antivenom products have increased dramatically making the remedy exorbitant for the majority who are in need. A safe, reliable and inexpensive alternative treatment strategy is the use of herbal medicines. The present review focusses on various medicinal plants that are raised and used for snake bite treatments. Literature sources viz., Scopus, Web of Science, SCIELO, PubMed etc. have been explored and data have been composed highlighting the therapeutic plants, bioactive compounds, mode of administration etc., based on the accessible information. The study spotlights the various medicinal plants used in treating venomous snake bites which would serve as a tool in launching the imminent therapy against snake bite treatment and management.
