A Review: Effect of pre sowing treatments on seed germination of medicinal plants

RH Vinoda and Shivakumar Akkalkot

India is one of the largest producers of medicinal plants in the world with 8000 medicinal plants originated in it. But many of these medicinal plants are not commercially cultivated due to various reasons. One among them is the unavailability of quality planting material. Majority of medicinal plants are propagated through seeds, which exhibit dormancy and germination problems due to their wild origin. Various pre-sowing treatments like scarification, stratification, use of growth regulators, bio-stimulants, chemicals, heat, radiation etc. are employed to break the seed dormancy as well as to enhance the germination. Thereby help in the production of quality planting material for commercial cultivation.
