Herbs in pregnancy: A systematic review of herbs used during pregnancy

Pratik Terse and Yogesh Padalkar

Pregnancy is a sensitive physiological state where herbal remedies are often used to manage symptoms like nausea, insomnia, and digestive discomfort. Despite their natural origin, many herbs have potent pharmacological effects that may impact fetal development or interact with medications. This systematic review examines the safety and efficacy of commonly used herbs during pregnancy, such as Zingiber officinale, Rubus idaeus, and Mentha piperita. While some offer therapeutic benefits, others like black cohosh, licorice root, and Doing quai pose risks including miscarriage and hormonal disruption. The review underscores concern about herb–drug interactions, lack of standardization, and unsupervised use driven by cultural beliefs. It emphasizes the need for evidence-based guidance, regulatory oversight, and healthcare provider awareness to ensure the safe use of herbal medicines during pregnancy.
