Tulsi (Ocimum spp.): A herb for all reasons-micro propagation and comparative study of antioxidant properties

Satabdi Ghosh

According to ancient Ayurvedic texts, Tulsi (Ocimum spp.) possesses a wide range of therapeutic properties and has long held a prominent place in traditional medicine. Among its various forms, certain varieties are primarily valued for medicinal use, while others are utilized as condiments or for religious rituals. Ocimum tenuiflorum, commonly referred to as Krishna Tulsi, is believed to offer superior health benefits compared to other tulsi varieties. The present study aims to compare the antioxidant properties of Ocimum tenuiflorum (Krishna Tulsi) and Ocimum sanctum (Rama Tulsi), the latter being more commonly distributed across diverse regions. As O. tenuiflorum is less frequently found in the wild, its seeds were procured and propagated through in vitro tissue culture techniques to facilitate controlled comparative analyses.
