A comprehensive review of the Rutaceae family: Taxonomy, Phytochemistry, Pharmacology, and Applied Aspects

The Rutaceae, commonly known as the rue or citrus family, is a significant family of flowering plants renowned for its economic, medicinal, and cultural importance. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the taxonomy, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and applied aspects of the Rutaceae family. The family is characterized by a remarkable diversity of specialized metabolites, including alkaloids, coumarins, limonoids, and volatile oils, which are responsible for its wide range of biological activities. These activities encompass antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects, underpinning their traditional uses and modern pharmaceutical applications. Beyond medicine, Rutaceae species are indispensable in the food, cosmetic, and agricultural industries. This paper highlights the integral role of Rutaceae in various sectors and suggests directions for future research.
