Phytochemistry and pharmacological activity: A review of Mucuna pruriens L.

Sunila S Wararkar

Mucuna pruriens (Fabaceae) is a well-known herbal remedy, sometimes known as "velvet bean," which is a vigorous annual climbing legume native to Southern China and Eastern India, where it was historically widely farmed as a green vegetable crop. The study examines the biochemical and pharmacological significance of Mucuna pruriens, a tropical legume that has gained notoriety for its therapeutic properties and rich phytochemical composition. The study highlights the plant's historical and contemporary use in the treatment of conditions like Parkinson's disease, male infertility, and ailments linked to oxidative stress. It is based on old herbal systems like Ayurveda and Siddha. The three stages of development under study, germination, vegetative growth, and reproductive maturity, show a dynamic shift in antioxidants, protein, carbohydrates, and chlorophyll. It highlights the importance of secondary metabolites, particularly flavonoids and phenolic compounds, in the battle against chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer, arthritis, and neurological diseases. With a focus on the importance of natural substances in modern pharmacology, nutrition, and illness prevention, the study also covers the technological applications of antioxidants and their classification.
