Jalpippali (Lippia nodiflora Mich): A comprehensive review of ethnobotany, phytochemistry and pharmacology

Swamini Sharma, Deepak Pareek, Divya Jain and Dr. Subash Sahu

Objective: To systematically review and analyse the traditional uses, phytochemical composition, and pharmacological activities of Lippia nodiflora Mich. to evaluate its therapeutic potential and identify research gaps for future clinical development.

Data Source: The information was compiled from classical Ayurvedic texts, including the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and various Nighantus. Contemporary scientific literature was retrieved from electronic databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar.

Review Method: A systematic literature search was performed using relevant keywords related to ethnomedicinal use, phytochemistry, and pharmacological activities of Lippia nodiflora Mich. Studies involving both traditional documentation and experimental validation through pre-clinical studies were included.

Results: Phytochemical investigations revealed diverse bioactive constituents including flavonoids (nodifloretin, hispidulin, eupafolin), benzofuranones (rengyolone), triterpenoids (lippiacin), steroids (?-sitosterol, stigmasterol), and phenylethanoid glycosides (arenarioside, verbascoside). Advanced analytical techniques, HR-LCMS, HR-GCMS, HPLC, and NMR spectroscopy, have been employed for structural elucidation and quantitative analysis. Pharmacological studies demonstrated significant hepatoprotective, anti-melanogenesis, neuroprotective, antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, antidandruff, antihyperglycemic, and anticancer activities in experimental models.

Conclusion: Jalpippali exhibits considerable therapeutic potential supported by both traditional knowledge systems and contemporary pharmacological evidence. However, the translation of experimental findings to clinical applications remains limited due to insufficient clinical trials and standardisation protocols. Future research should prioritise systematic clinical studies, bioactivity-guided standardisation, and safety evaluations to facilitate integration into evidence-based healthcare systems and pharmaceutical development.
