Conocarpus lancifolius extract mitigates behavioral and histopathological alterations in aluminum chloride-induced Alzheimer’s disease in mice

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive cognitive decline and behavioral impairments. The current work aimed to investigate the potential neuroprotective effects of Conocarpus lancifolius (C. lancifolius) extract in an aluminum chloride (AlCl3)-induced AD-like model in mice. Mice were divided into three main groups and treated for 14 consecutive days as follows: (1) control group (receiving the drug vehicle), (2) model group (receiving AlCl3 50 mg/kg/day, i.p.), and (3) treatment group (receiving both AlCl3 and C. lancifolius extract 200 mg/kg/day, p.o.). The behavioral testing included: (1) the novel object recognition test (ORT), Y-maze, and forced swim test (FST). The results revealed a significant improvement in spatial working and non-spatial memory, learning ability, and reduced depressive-like behavior in the treatment group receiving the extract. In addition, histological examination showed preserved hippocampal architecture in mice receiving the extract. These findings suggest that C. lancifolius extract exerts neuroprotective effects, warranting further biochemical and molecular investigations as a promising therapeutic candidate for AD management.
